Yes?
9/14/08 6:08 PM
I stepped away from the computer
9/14/08 6:08 PM
not up for voice
9/14/08 6:08 PM
just text
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:09 PM
Hello, thank you for responding.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:09 PM
ok
9/14/08 6:10 PM
hit return so i can read at least the first part of what you’re writing
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:10 PM
I wanted to ask you something about a possible technology project focus.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:11 PM
ok
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:11 PM
After reading several recourses I am leaning toward choosing Social Operating Systems as my emerging technology research topic. The Horizon Report, 208 edition, stated “The first social operating system tools. Only just emerging now, understand who we know, how we know them, and how deep our relationships actually are” (p. 26). This sounds like a big topic but since I am only now learning about it, can you suggest any ideas as to how this topic might be narrowed down?
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:11 PM
i would list all the tools
9/14/08 6:11 PM
categorize them
9/14/08 6:11 PM
and then choose a category
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:13 PM
There do not seem to be a lot of tools developed yet and
9/14/08 6:13 PM
by keeping tghe focus on tools rather than
9/14/08 6:14 PM
perspectives on possible new tools to be developed
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:14 PM
you’re talking about hte paper in 8823?
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:14 PM
yes.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:14 PM
make sure to choose something that there is enough written on that you can survey and extrapolate
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:14 PM
There seem to be a lot of thoughts as to different ways
9/14/08 6:15 PM
that future tools will impact learning.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:16 PM
writing about the future is tricky and always dependent upon the quality of your references
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:16 PM
Maybe I am focusing too far into the future.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:16 PM
if this is something you’re interested in, then a little research to see what the body of research is
9/14/08 6:16 PM
Gary …
9/14/08 6:16 PM
just keep it simple
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:17 PM
Maybe what I can do is pick one of the
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:17 PM
choose somehting that you’re interested in and that has enough research to
9/14/08 6:17 PM
write about
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:18 PM
tools presentated in this article, do some more
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:18 PM
sounds good
9/14/08 6:18 PM
look at the references they use
9/14/08 6:18 PM
then look at the references used by them
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:19 PM
research on it and look for ways it might
9/14/08 6:19 PM
impact teaching and learning.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:19 PM
you can do a short survey of current uses of new technologies in this category
9/14/08 6:19 PM
then write about new uses
9/14/08 6:19 PM
new technologies used in new ways
9/14/08 6:20 PM
so 10 pages
9/14/08 6:21 PM
definitions
9/14/08 6:21 PM
current uses
9/14/08 6:21 PM
maybe some theory of change or application of technology
9/14/08 6:21 PM
then your extrapolation of new uses
9/14/08 6:22 PM
there are a variety of journals that would accept a “think piece”
9/14/08 6:22 PM
so you have some room to do some reflection and futuristic application
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:23 PM
My search of emerging technologies reveled items that
9/14/08 6:24 PM
I know are not… well… wireless electricity, for example. This will impact
9/14/08 6:25 PM
education but it’s uses are unknown at this time.
9/14/08 6:25 PM
It sounds as if social operating systems are being
9/14/08 6:25 PM
used in som minor ways now but the prospect
9/14/08 6:25 PM
for their future development will
9/14/08 6:26 PM
impact education an everyday lives.
9/14/08 6:26 PM
Yiur suggestions have helped me focused my big
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:26 PM
hold on i’m looking for a video for you
9/14/08 6:26 PM
brb
Gary DeRoest
9/14/08 6:27 PM
topic. I will try to organize my ideas and get them posted to the Web site in the next hour.
Cheri Toledo
9/14/08 6:29 PM
that sounds good
9/14/08 6:29 PM
i can’t find that video right now
9/14/08 6:29 PM
when I do i’ll post it
9/14/08 6:29 PM
have a good night

Thanks for the links. I have seen the 2014 version from youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQDBhg60UNI) but I had not seen the 2015 version.

Hello. I am in your Walden 8823 course. I would like clarity about week #3, discussion #1. I believe that the difference between CBT and WBT is not tied to media distribution method. For example, CBT (Computer-Based Training) may be distributed via CD/DVD media and installed on a computer such that Internet connectivity is not required. WBT (Web-Based Training) requires constant or intermittent communication with Internet-Based services or resources. So media files such as training videos that can be downloaded from Internet resources but can be stored and interacted with locally without Internet connectivity would be considered CBT, not WBT. I have not found a clearer differentiation between the two other than your lesson notes. I want to make sure that I am understanding the statement “find two different courses delivered via the Internet: one CBT and one WBT.” However, maybe the purpose of the discussion is to ferret out this differentiation. I think that I will just pose my question to the discussion board.
Cheri Toledo
9/22/08 7:15 AM
good idea
9/22/08 7:15 AM
there was a mistake in the initial question posted on the discussion board itself
9/22/08 7:15 AM
it wasn’t the same as the question listed in the overview of Week 3
9/22/08 7:15 AM
so some people saw a different version
Gary DeRoest
9/22/08 7:17 AM
Good morning.
Cheri Toledo
9/22/08 7:17 AM
hi
Gary DeRoest
9/22/08 7:17 AM
I saw the difference and kept with the description
9/22/08 7:17 AM
displayed in Week 3.

Hey Gary,
9/21/08 4:05 PM
How the class?
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:18 PM
Hello Thomas. I am doing well. I had to step away for a few minutes and did not realize that Skype was still on. Sorry.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:18 PM
hay Gary…that is okay…I am going to bring you over to the other discussion if you don’t mind…
Gary DeRoest

Great!

This is good to know.
9/21/08 5:19 PM
Hi Gary
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:20 PM
Hello everybody!
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:20 PM
Yes, my wife and I was researching the job and it was a sudden realization…..Running a community college means that you are really a CEO huh?
9/21/08 5:20 PM
Helloe Gary, Glad you can join us….
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:20 PM
True.
9/21/08 5:21 PM
Hmmm…I guess the position is really large-scale mangement
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:21 PM
I originally thought you had to work your way through the community college system to be president, I was wrong….
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:22 PM
You are not thinking of becoming a college president, are you?
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:22 PM
I am trying to pick up the conversation thread. I treach at a community college, was on a hiring committee to hire our new president as well as our new CIO. I am president of the full time faculty association.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:23 PM
Yes, I was actually going to pursue that in CCL, but then I switched over to how much actually gets done when people are in meetings…
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:23 PM
Gary, you are in the right conversation!
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:23 PM
Then you are at home…We were talking about how CC President are more about being a CEO…..
9/21/08 5:24 PM
What you think Gary?
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:24 PM
Each president that I have worked under (3) and an intrim
9/21/08 5:25 PM
have had different leadership styles.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:25 PM
We were also talking about how easier it is for our type of degree to be accepted at a CC than at a university….
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:25 PM
Our current and new president seems to work hard ar commecting with the community
9/21/08 5:26 PM
and likes to keep faculty involved/in control.
9/21/08 5:26 PM
Just the way I like it.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:26 PM
I like that
9/21/08 5:26 PM
…be right back
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:27 PM
Yeah, that is why I think it is a delicate balancing act….
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:27 PM
However, he walked into a contract bargain that he has not taken control of yet.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:27 PM
hmmmmm….
9/21/08 5:28 PM
Do you think he will be succesful in the process?
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:29 PM
It is difficult to say. He indicates that he wants the bargain to wrap up soon but
9/21/08 5:30 PM
has not made changes to the bargaining team for the college.
9/21/08 5:30 PM
We (the faculty) have requested a State mediator to help move things along.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:31 PM
…back.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:32 PM
That is good…..I have been in the CC for a while even though I am considered faculty, I spend more time in Adminstrative role with the nature of my job….
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:32 PM
That is another question I have…salary and benefits–are they up to the level of public secondary level? Or is it more, or less…?
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:34 PM
I think the benfits and salary is up to par….
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:34 PM
In Oregon I would say that CC faculty get paid a bit more than K-12 faculty.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:34 PM
We are battling here in Miami-Dade County, Florida over salary
9/21/08 5:34 PM
Although everything else is increasing, our salaries are not following suit
9/21/08 5:35 PM
I was hoping there was more professional respect for educators and their value at least in higher education
9/21/08 5:35 PM
It should be all over, but…
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:36 PM
When I worked at ASU, the Chair of the science department could not understand why so many of his faculty members were leaving for the CC. Once he looked at the salary diffences, he beging to understand.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:36 PM
Exactly
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:36 PM
In Oregon CC are stuck in the middle for $$ support between K12 and the University system.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:36 PM
How does the state manage increases?
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:37 PM
Voters love kids and universities
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:37 PM
Nice…
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:37 PM
Our tuitions has risin from $35 a credit hout to $70 over the last 6 years.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:38 PM
I see how they manage it…You have to pay for quality education.
9/21/08 5:38 PM
…no doubt.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:38 PM
Yes, CC normaly is, but part of university salary is based upon research dollars and books thay have published….At ASU, faculty was coming in around 55K but the starting salary for CC was 47K without the pressure of research….publish or perish
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:39 PM
Tango, that is encouraging
9/21/08 5:39 PM
but that is full-time staff, right
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:39 PM
A faculty member at the top step of our salary schedul earns more than almost all other public higher ed institutions in the state.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:39 PM
Nice…
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:40 PM
Each institution sets their own salary.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:40 PM
It is very encouraging to “hear” this. Most of us will have a PhD at a cost.
9/21/08 5:41 PM
We have to be able to survive, while working.
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:41 PM
I need to clarify something, however
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:41 PM
Yes, it is, My SCUBA instructor was also a BIOlogy Professor at GCC. He also did research at ASU but when they started getting on his nerves, he could walk away without his job being affected….Now, he just does his own research and publish on his own timetable….He reallly broke it down for me.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:42 PM
I love my profession–20 years in secondary, but I have to have professional respect and respectful value of my worth, as well.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:42 PM
Waitng on you Gary…
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:43 PM
Salary is not differentiated by program market pressure. A history instructor at step 5 earns the same as a business instructor at step 5.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:43 PM
Gary is right, Howard University has a terrible salary range at least for the DC area
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:44 PM
I wonder why Howard pays so much less?
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:44 PM
Is this at the CC or the university…..
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:44 PM
I am talking about the salary at the CC where I work.
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:45 PM
With this being one of the top HBCU, a lot of African Americans want to work there…
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:45 PM
Do they have to publish
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:45 PM
Yes,
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:46 PM
Some campuses may specify ranks such as Associate profesor, full professor and the like but here we are all instructors – even those with PhD’s.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:46 PM
There is a lot of pressure, then. How can a professor survive in DC’s market, then?
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:46 PM
Okay Gary, my comment was about the difference of working in the CC system versus a University system…
9/21/08 5:46 PM
With my wife being a Howard Alumm, most have their own business on the side….
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:47 PM
I have not worked in the University System. And I would not want to give up my current salary to do so.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:47 PM
Sounds rewarding
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:47 PM
Neither would I…..
9/21/08 5:47 PM
Well,
9/21/08 5:49 PM
I need to leave this discussion so I can work on an assignment due in 8826 that has to be in at midnight…as I tell everyone…life at Walden still goes on when when the traditional systems come to a stand still……
Gary DeRoest
9/21/08 5:50 PM
I must leave too. Thanks for the conversation. Bye.
Stephania Biddings
9/21/08 5:50 PM
Thanks you two.
9/21/08 5:50 PM
bye
AT Thomas
9/21/08 5:51 PM
Yes, thanks everyone for joining…see ya next week and online…
Stephania Biddings
